Forbidden Door card predictions

April 20th 2022 will mark the day that the landscape of wrestling changed forever. Finally the rumors of New Japan Pro Wrestling partnering with an American company can be put to rest as presidents of AEW and NJPW, Tony Khan and Takami Ohbari, shook hands at the top of the rampway on Dynamite. This is a massive deal as what had once been a dream for wrestling fans since the inception of AEW in 2019, has finally become a reality.

Now that we've had a night to rest, its time to start dream booking the super-show and decide what the best possible matchups could look like. I think the theme for this show will be NJPW wrestlers that have already debuted on American television being the main focus, while also throwing some dream matches that have been teased at for some time. Here's some of the matchups I think we could get.

CM Punk vs Kazuchika Okada

Why not start off with the main event? Surprisingly I think this is the most matchup that seems most likely to happen. The event being held in the United center almost guarantees a CM Punk match. The only other time AEW has ran the United center was for The First Dance which saw CM Punk return to wrestling and debut for AEW. Back in January CM Punk hinted at this match becoming a reality as he tweeted out the below tweet.
Recently we've seen that CM Punks twitter callouts do hold weight in AEW as his challanges to Penta Oscuro and Dustin Rhodes have resulted in dream matches in back to back weeks. It should be noted that since this event will be taking place in June it will be happening following Double Or Nothing. I do think CM Punk will go on and defeat Hangman Page for the world title at that event, so we could be looking at a Champion v Champion matchup in the main event, as Okada is currently the IWGP Heavyweight Champion. Truly the most exciting and interesting matchup I think they could do with either wrestler. In the end I would see Punk winning the match as his run as champion will just be beginning and to have the crowd in Chicago truly go wild.

Bryan Danielson vs Jay White

Bullet Club vs Blackpool Combat Club. Sign me up.

It seems like AEW & NJPW are positioning Jay White to be a major player within the Forbidden Door storyline. It's understandable as White has major appeal to the American audience that NJPW is trying to attract to their product, so putting him in a marquee match is crucial, and who better to face off against than Bryan Danielson. This feud could go on in the weeks prior to the show as you could see all the different possibilities with these two mega factions going to war. With Moxley and Yuta already having businesses in NJPW this could be a great entry way to get Danielson involved. The result of this match could go many different ways, Danielson does love a good 60 minute draw, but regardless it could be one of the best matches of the year.

Adam Cole vs Kota Ibushi

I must admit that I am not completely up to date with NJPW, but one thing I do know is that Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi have a storied history that I would love to see explored in a feud with Adam Cole. If Kenny Omega is not available to wrestle on this event than I think this would be a great start to the eventual Cole vs Omega feud that is sure to be one of the best AEW has done. The possibilities with Cole, Ibushi, Young Bucks, ReDRagon, and Omega all intertwined in a feud are endless.
